Pastor’s Message~ February
is upon us and, this year anyway, that means Lent is around the corner. We will again partner with ALC
for mid-week services, beginning with Ash Wednesday on Feb 22nd. This will again be preceded by a Mardi Gras celebration on Tuesday, Feb 21st 1 beginning at 6:00p.m. This will be a pot-luck with a carnival
hosted and staffed by the youth going to the National Youth Gathering in July. Bring a dish, Cajun or otherwise,
and enjoy the festivities. All events will take place at ALC this year. The question hovers:
is Lent even relevant anymore? Why do we bother? The themes of Lent—fasting,
meditation, penitence, suffering—who does those voluntarily these days, unless one is trying to get rid of some excess
weight from the holidays, that is? We already sacrifice enough in everyday life. Holy cow, maybe that’s
why Lent isn’t even observed in many “mainline” churches. But maybe—just maybe—we
still need Lent. Maybe we need the six weeks—or at least Wednesdays and Sundays of that period—to
focus on the fact that it’s not all about me, there’s something greater, a bigger picture of which we’re
a part. Maybe we need to remember that we can’t do it on our own, we fail when we do, and the Easter
promise awaits. Consider making Wednesday evenings a part of your Lenten discipline. Come
to ALC at 6:00 p.m. for a soup supper, followed by worship. You will learn this year about some of the
characters of the Hebrew Scriptures (Daniel, Elijah, Gideon and Ruth), and characters of the Christian Scriptures (Ananias
and Zacchaeus). Blessings on your journey.
